Last Exile US DVD Homepage

Sorry if someone's already posted it - I looked through the thread titles on this forum, but I didn't see anything that looked like it.
I found out because of a two page ad in Anime Insider Magazine. (The cover advertised a preview of the Hellsing manga.) *shrug* wink.gif

It's a pretty spiffy Flash site. They haven't completed the site yet, though.
Kirara
OMG! I was gonna burn my espisodes on dvd...I don't know about that now, hopefully it won't be dubbed dry.gif I guess we'll have to wait to find out when the site is up to know, unless someone can confirm it before. Oh, well thanks for letting us know biggrin.gif
Oberion
its about f-ing time.
Drago
Hell YEAH!
Jonster
Yeah, I knew about this a while ago. That's why I started downloading it so that when it comes out on the 18th, I won't have to miss out on anything. Also, I wanted to compare subs with dubs without having to buy it. I'm so cheap!
Kirara
The website is updated. Its a pretty nice site. Watch the 1st clip *Cringes at the pronounciation* Mullin = Moran hehe, it just looks weird now tongue.gif

Pioneer is doing the US DVD release. The DVD's will be selectable as dubbed or japanese with subtitles, so everyone should be happy. The retail price for the first volume (episodes 1-4) is going to be either $35 or $40, I can't quite remember. The initial release will be available with just the DVD, the DVD with extras ($45) or the DVD with art-box and extras ($55-$60). Any way you slice it, Pioneer is really milking this. A subbed japanese box-set realease will be out soon, so I plan on buying that at a fraction of the price. US DVD's are ridiculously priced.. no way can a poor college student afford to pay $8-$10 an episode.... Hope that helped!
cannedviction
Wow, AF was damn accurate with a lot of the names! But I have NO idea how Madossein got translated to Mad-thane on the official website!! Ugh.
Shadow
www.animecastle.com has much better prices then the retail prices. wink.gif
RainaWallis
Fwee! Less than a week to go!

And darn! The American website should have links to vanship...soaring on it! *hee* I'm a little annoyed at the choice of names

Gah... Mulin?? How do they get that from Moran, which is so much nicer? I need to get a job at Pioneer, if only to tell them how to spell names... (Alister? Mad-Thane? Jeeze)
Ningyou Senshi
I just watched the handful of dubbed clips available. Lavie's voice...I don't know what to make of it with only a handful of lines, but so far I'm not enthusiastic...
Some of the name translation choices are horrible. Eracles? Alister? Huh?
Mullin. I bet that's going to go down in anime history as the worst name translation ever. Poor guy. o_0;;
Is there an error in Dio's profile? It says he's the son of the most powerful person in the Guild...but that would be Delphine, his sister, right?
Malik Carr
Eh, I bet they'll clear things up before long.

When I was at Comic-Con in San Diego this year, I saw the second episode of L.E. with those official-looking yellow subtitles; I can only assume those would be from a pre-release of the DVD.

I saw it there as "Mad Thane" which I must admit sounds really cool, though it doesn't quite match the phoenitics behind it.

I don't think the website is very accurate as far as things go, oddly enough... They refer to Mad Thane as a lieutenant on that site, whereas they appropriately called him a Duke in the episode I saw quite some time ago. Hopefully, some of the other horribly mistranslated names will actually be derefit.

...though, they did decide to include the 'E' in Lavie's name. I personally never understood why the AF people left that out, anyway.

Ah well, time will reveal all.

Amazing.. hmm..

Y'know, I never used to mind dubs too much, but based on the previews I've listened to, this one just seems to suck all of the oomph out of the acting in the original version. It's funny, I never used to be a sub snob, but i'm quickly turning into one now. tongue.gif

I hope they don't mess with the subtitles, at least. *sigh*

Then again, I really liked the way the almost all of the original voice actors voiced their roles. I suppose it would be hard for any dub to capture that feeling.
Kuja105
I don't mind the dub. It could be a LOT worse. I just pray they don't show it on Toonami... dry.gif
Lelldorin
why? it'll expose a much larger audience to one of the few truly good anime around, even if it will also cause a disturbing influx of those horrible horrible AOLers that invaded the FLCL fandom after it was shown on Adult swim... *shudder*

i am seriously thinking of writing a letter to geneon, though, about their HORRIBLE name translations. how exactly did they get "mullin" from "mo-ra-n"? o_O if they can defend their name translations, i will be amazed.
Oogs
i just thought i'd say this: I have the dvd with al's figurine. i still haven't watched it though. smile.gif
Calibur
Why not? Keeping it for a unopen collection? hehe. I hate dubs! BAH! Always like Subs, dubs are bah.
Jonster
Hey, I got a problem. I'm almost done with the series, but due to the fact that I'm sharing a computer with six other people in my family, I can't download the rest of the episodes tonight. Is it possible that I can still download the rest after the 18th? I'm getting the DVD ... in fact, I have it on pre-order, but I don't want to be ruined in the experience due to bad dubbing. So is it possible that you can keep the episodes up until maybe Friday? PLEASE!? Thanks for your time and I hope you will keep them up.

smiley_cry.gif that's a damn shame oh well i'm saving up now... ahh they've masacred names starts planning a road trip to pioneer to off a few translaters

my two fears about the dubs----
delphine's and alex's voice [if they mess these up, we're gonna have a war with me leading the charge]

[stares at empty wallet some more and cries some more]

Pioneer can keep their bad translations... I'll take my $25 subtitled boxset.... tongue.gif

Just finished watching the Dubbed DvD tonight. (seems I got it 1 day ahead of release wink.gif) I got the collector box with it. The one side of the box has the "zoomed out" version of Alvis sitting on the edge of Sylvana's deck elevator ("See you on the next flight!" pic), the other side has the one in my sig (left side).

I believe Lavi's VA is the same as Haru on FLCL. (I could be wrong, but it sure sounded like it) Alex and Sophia's VAs weren't bad, but I wished they had a slightly deeper voice to match the Japenese ones.

I believe the best match was Alvis! They did a good match there IMO. Claus sounds OK..... I think the hardest thing is after wathing 26 Eps in Japenese, hearing it in English seems a tad awkward at first, but it'll grow on me!

One thing that I cringe at is ... "Mad-thane" .... WTH?! Did Gonzo really intend that to be his character's name in English or did they pull that out of their butt? Every time I here it I think he's some crazed Norse Viking shaking a hammer above his head, sailing to conquer some foreign land........ it just seems.... well, odd.

The quality of the DVDs is GREAT!!!! And it's amazing how close the AF-F versions came to that quality! They sure did a great job!

The English script is almost perfectly in line with the Japenese one. Lavi screams out "Screw your Chivalry, Screw IT!" instead of the "Bullshit!!" line in Ep2. (I believe those familiar of the series know the particular scene I'm referring to wink.gif)

The strange thing is actually watching the action on the screen and not the lower 1/10th of the screen 85% of the time! LOL!!

Episode 26 comes out on DvD Dec 14, 2004. With all the high quality it will bring, I don't believe it will ever capture the feeling and warmth that AF-F's did with their "special" intro into it. That will always be my favorite of all times!!

DvD release dates:

Vol 2 - Feb 3, 2004
Vol 3 - April 6, 2004
Vol 4 - June 8, 2004
Vol 5 - Aug 10, 2004
Vol 6 - Oct 12, 2004
Vol 7 - Dec 14, 2004

Does anyone have pictures of the collector's box stuff that they could post? I can't seem to find any pictures on Amazon and am trying to decide whether it's worth the extra money to get the collector's box.

I saw on the LE Japanese site that they're offering collectors' editions with model vanships for the next two DVDs in Japan. Anyone know a good source for that sort of stuff? I know they're expensive, but I'd love to have one the vanship models. (Yes, I'm just dorky that way.) cool.gif

TIA

CD Japan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/Listups/anime/last-exile.html) is the best importer I've come across.. They may take a while for backorders, but I'm sure pre-orders like the LE stuffwill be really fast. Be prepared to pay alot for S&H though ^.^''

Unfortuneatly I didn't see the Vanship Figure set you were looking for, but chances are it will be there soon, if it's going to be released.

The OST's are here though, and I'm seriously considering buying them and the 2004 calendar *^.^*

I can't believe I forgot today was the day. blink.gif

I picked up my LotR-TTT Extended DVD, but not Last Exile.

You all have permission to shoot me now. sad.gif

"Screw your Chivalry!" ???

That's a very good line, but it does not match the one I saw at Comic-Con...

Lavie said something along the lines of "The Spirit of Chivalry can kiss my ass!!" in that one. Which makes me wonder exactly what it was I was watching...

It was pretty good, though, when Madsein muttered to himself, "Kiss my ass, eh?" The look on the Clau Soras' captain's face was twice as funny after that line that it would be with anything else.

Oh, BTW. Raina, how goes progress on your computer repair you were speaking of?

Ah, I just figured out that the vanships are paper models that come with vols. 6 &7 of the DVDs. That explains quite a bit, actually. Still, though, I'd like to try to find models of the vanships. Hmm... Ah, well. Thanks for the link!

*falls down scream* I want it!! But I'm too damn poor!! ;__;
Good thing my birthday is cominp up in less than a month though!! *begs her whole family to get it for her*
Jonster
I did the dorkiest thing. I went to go get it and then spent my money on something else before I got to the store. I was cruising around the mall and by the time I got to Best Buy, I didn't have $40 for the Limited Edition boxset! ::cries:: Now I got to wait a couple weeks until I got the money for it. I hope they don't run out.
Kirara
hmm, I didn't even know best buy carried anime ohmy.gif I don't go there a lot anyways and my town didn't even have one until a couple months ago, nearest one would be 45 min drive.
Will this be available to rent at someplace like blockbusters? I'm not sure I want to shell out my money yet biggrin.gif
Jonster
There's a huge section of anime at Best Buy. On the other hand, Blockbuster doesn't hold crap where I live. All the anime they got there is the obvious stuff: Mononoke, Spirited Away, Totoro, Pokemon, Eva. But what cracks me up is that they put a viewer disgresion sticker on all the anime because it has no rating. So even the pokemon tapes they got there has a sticker on it. LMAO! I hate our Blockbuster.
5stringdna
I dunno if any of you have a media play around, but they usually have about 2-3 times as much anime as Best Buy, and it's even more expensive. The one by my house carris around 60-70 anime series/movies I'd guess. They have several racks of it. No doubt they will have the boxset any day now, but Like I said, COllege students can't afford to pay $10 an episode. dry.gif Ebay, here I come...

Malik! I nearly forgot! Mostly done. wink.gif At least, I have a new computer now, and I have access to all my LE files. So I can send to you. PM me for a time that's good (EST)

And as soon as I can, I'm going to take pictures of all the nifty stuff that's in the DVD collection and put it up on vanship...soaring.

They have this diagram inside the DVD case that has pictures of Alex's vanship - AND EVERYTHING IS LABELED! It's so freakin' cool! ^.^

I haven't watched the DVD yet, tho (heh... FFXI can be VERY distracting *ahem*)

I'll let folks know when I put stuff up on the website. I think I might go ahead and make screenshots of the DVDs to replace the ones I made from the .avi RAWS I got while subbing it.

*hee* I have to admit to a little self-advertising. When I went into the Virgin MegaStore, here in NYC to purchase the boxed set, I couldn't find it at first, and the store clerk didn't think they had it. Luckily, I noticed that they had the special boxed anime sets next to the cash register on a separate shelf, and I was able to get one. They'd never heard of Last EXILE, so I proceeded to tell them I'd been part of the fansubbing team for the series and that it was an exceptional series as well, and highly reccommended. ^.^

Hopefully they'll try it. smile.gif I'll see when I return to pick up the second DVD when it comes out.
Joan Sartre
eh? You're the person who does Vanship Soaring?? XD oh WOW i can't tell you enough how cool the website is!! It really got me interested in the series when I had only seen 2 episodes at Comic-Con, and when I got a look at some of the screens and story I was like, "OMG I HAVE TO FINISH THIS SERIES XD" it was great, thanks for having screencaps, also!! *^.^*

lol, cool! I remember I was in NYC about the time that the Cowboy Bebop movie came out and I was surprised to see so many posters on the street/walls that advirtised the movie. I wish more anime (er, anime that deserves it ^.^'') got the attention that it deserves... promotion! PROMOTION! rah rah rah!

DVD came today... mmmm... it's beautiful stuff on my monitor (23" Cinema Display). Sounds great, too. But I haven't tried listening to the dubs yet. I'm a bit hesitant to do that.

I did manage to get my Alvis figure put together... sort of.... I have extra parts that I don't know what to do with. An extra hoop thing. And then there's this coat-- I'm still not exactly sure how to get it on. The only way that I could see involved removing her arms and the little goat she's holding. But then that leaves me with 3 little parts rolling around instead of just one big one, and I figure I can manage one choking hazard better than 3. Seriously, does anyone think these things through?

But the DVD is gorgeous, in spite of the weirdness of the subtitles. They left the Mullin/Mad-Thane nonsene in. No, I don't know why. I would figure that they could afford decent translators over there. Guess it's one of those decisions. There's a great interview with one fo the Production Designers, too. Informative.

Now I just have to wait... until... February?? Ugh. Ah, well. At least I have those WONDERFUL FANSUBS to tide me over until then. (Unless, of course, Apple breaks Quicktime again. *sigh*)
kittenbitten
I reccommend Mplayer OSX for playing movies on a mac. I prefer it over watching stuff in Quicktime. I've never been able to watch .avi files in quicktime.
cynicalicious
Umm.. mplayer did something really nasty to FCP 4 on my 'puter once, so I avoid it. I use VLC when QT craps out on me. (Although it has its moments as well.) But I know that VLC won't mess with my FCP install, and that's important right now. But thanks for the suggestion.

As for the dub-- just listened to part of it, and yes, the VA who does Lavie is the same one who did Haruko in the dub of FLCL. There's no way I'll be able to listen to the dub now-- I'll keep waiting for her to yank out a guitar and start clobbering Claus, who sounds suspiciously like the VA for Vash in the dub of Trigun. Don't know if it's for sure, though. I didn't really feel like checking the credits. And somewhere on the bridge of the Silvana, I heard the VA who did Jet in the dub of Bebop.

I wish they'd broaden the pool of dub VA talent they draw from for these things. It's just too weird and too confusing to keep hearing the same voices over and over again.

Ah, well. The subtitles are fine, but not as good as y'all did 'em for the fansubs. But the video is rather nice, so I s'pose I'll keep the DVD. biggrin.gif

I KNOW! I'm trying to put the thing together... and I'm looking at her coat/cape... and I'm thinking, this is so not working. unsure.gif I actually did take her arms off, just to see if the cape would go on, but it wouldn't go over her head, and I didn't want to decpaitate Al and not be able to put her head back on again. dry.gif

You know what's dopey though? Mullin Shetland. Mullin... it sounds like a breakfast cereal. mad.gif Dang... I wish that Pioneer and Urban Vision and Ban Dai, and all the other places would actually look at some fansubs of the series (like AF's dangit!) to get a better way of naming their main characters. You have to remove Al's head in order to get the cape on, but it's not easily done. (I guess it's because she's got her head on straight, huh?) Ahhh, I slay myself... Anyway, her head has a socket that covers a small ball that sticks up from her neck. Sort of like how the support snaps into the stand, but not as easy to remove. You have to wiggle it off to get it off so you can get the coat on and.... it's just not worth the trouble.

Besides, she's cuter with the little goat.

lol, i was just listening to my roomate complain about the exact same thing with *japanese voice actors* even though, yesh, there's alot more seiyuu (VAs) in Japan, they still have this very small pool that just MONOPLIZES popular anime.... Just be thankful that those are relatively good VAs they keep using in Dubs ^.^'' I actually like those that you mentioned. But I'd probably be put off by Haruko-Alvis as well XD
