The only cartoon to come from Japan that I refuse to call anime is FLINT THE TIME DETECTIVE

I watched 5 minutes of that show, and had the urge to actually watch CNN (I hate CNN, I'd rather watch FOX NEWS).

I just couldn't find one thing to like about that show, dont relly know why, very other anime I have ever watched I liked, I might not have loved them, but flint was the only one I have ever loathed.

I must say I dont actually know the series at all, where did you see it, was it in television, if so which channel and when.
Did you download it please tell me which groups did it.

Yes, TV, I think fox kids had it on saturday for a bit, and it was either when ABC Family was still Fox Family, or just after ABC took it over..

No, I didn't download, after watching part of one episode, I decided that that tuff would never grace one sector of my hard drive. Most anime I watch, I love, this is the ONLY ONE I have loathed.

Hamtaro and Kogepan....
I downloaded the entire kogepan series before i watched a single episode...
and it was a complete waste of my time... it was so bad that i couldnt get through the first 5 minute episode without closing it and deleting the entire series

Hamtaro is the spawn of Satan! That stupid little song is just TRYING to take over the minds of viewers.... ~beats the song out of her head just as the first notes try to creep their way into her conscious thoughts~ Ack.... O.O Pokemon, Hamtaro, Dragon Ball Z (sorry guys! Had to say it), and something on Adult Swim called Reign the Conquerer or something (God, the animation is borderline disgusting - skinny muscle-y people with weird cheekbones O.O) top my list of shows that disgrace the anime name.... and just plain SHOULD NOT exist.... (note: All of the aforementioned series' lack one of two things... a plot with substance and quality animation). Oi....

Ah... Dragon Ball Z....Without that show i would never have even watched anime...

Eh, true... but it was both good and bad - it got me into anime in the first place (though now I despise it), but the dub is all I had access to at that time. And thus there was a LOT of screaming and turning yellow. Like.... 5 minutes at a time. Guess the American companies had to make up for all the stuff they cut out. It didn't bother me then because I didn't know better - but my parents hated it, and now they equate ALL anime with the dubbed DBZ. Such great anime as Fushigi Yugi, Full Moon wo Sagashite, Kenshin, and Inuyasha just shouldn't be compared to that show. Can't watch anything without my dad mimicking the DBZ dub voices, squatting down and yelling like Goku going super saiyan... ;; It makes those great touching moments and kickass fight scenes in anime very difficult to enjoy when he does that

I've never seem hamtaro, so when my sister got me this stuffed toy of hamtaro I thought to myself what the hell is that. She got it for me soley based on the fact that I like anime and she saw it at a store. He now has found a place sitting on top of my TV with my penguin and monkey.
Oh yea the anime my parents saw was Ninja Scroll and then End of Evangalion. They were a bit confused with Evangalion cause they have never seen the series and the show can be a bit confusing. They don't even talk about anime any more really.

I downloaded eps 1 from A-E, and it sucked, that little boy looks like a doll.., although the animation is pretty good but the plot sucks. the characters suck, the whole idea about Gash bell sucks!. if u say DBZ sucks then i guess ur saying DB/DBGT sucks also! SEE, my avatar over there, its cat with a sniper gun and its aiming at all u guys who hate DBZ!

DBZ is a lame kids show and manga,

DBZ makes veterans like me feel ill,

I can understand if some like it for sentimental reasons,

But I'm telling you, it has no story and it really sucks...
I will say that the beginning of Dragon Ball was good, tho.

Actually DBZ was one of the reasons i did get into anime...
and since i have seen over 50(probably closer to 100...am i still a begginer?) series and i still consider it one of my favourites...The other series that got me into anime was Gundam Wing...One of the few dubs IMO that were well dubbed...

I think you people need to give DBZ more credit, most of you probably wouldnt watch anime if it wasnt for you finding out about dbz first.

Any of you that watch over 30 episodes and say you hate dbz are lying, why the hell would you watch that many episodes if you didnt have any interest in it.

The story in dbz is not as bad as people make it out to be, it has 3 huge arcs with pretty awesome villains each time.

Freiza was a great unbeatable tyrant, Cell is one of the best ideas for villains ever if you ask me, Buu was a little weird but still an incredible foe.

I can watch piccolo fight android 17 and SS2 goku vs Majin Vegeta or Goku vs Cell over and over, No anime has as much quality fight scenes or action as dbz.

Honestly i cant understand why so many people seem to hate it so much but oh well.

It's a little silly to quibble over this because it's mearly a taste thing, you either like it or you don't. But when it comes down to it dbz is a kids show and a show aimed at mainly at young boys, all be it a very good kids show in my humble opinion. I think maybe some people feel a little resentment towards dbz because of it's popularity and is perhaps worry that if some people are only exposed to it that they will have a misguided opinion of anime altogether.
I think some of the original Japanese episodes have merit just for making a kids show so rude, perverted and down right violent.

No we don't. As a kid I grew up with Gatchaman and Battleship Yamato, then Macross in high school. Both are supremely clever shows compared to the dumbed-down social pollution that DBZ alleges as writing. I say this cuz I recently bought the Robotech DVDs, and although the show didn't age terribly well AT ALL, it's STILL better than even the NEWEST DBZ that I keep having to buy for my kids.

Not gonna argue about it though, I'd still rather have my kids watching DBZ than say... anything else on TV. And if you grew up with DBZ as your anime first love, I doubt anyone can change your mind about it. I just pity you.

And no, I wouldn't call toy vehicles like Pokemon/DBZ et al, anime. That would be an insult people like Miyazaki, Anno and others who make works of art that contribute to the wealth of human greatness.

Don't forget Takahashi, Kubo Taito,
or Yuu Watase. No one gives cedit to Watase.
She created one hell of a masterpiece -
Fushigi Yuugi. Something you can't put down.
Tightly plotted and never gets boring.

This goes fore Bleach & Ranma½ too,
and of course for Inuyasha (...),
even though I'm not the biggest IY fan,
it's still a fun anime/manga to follow.

Character characterizations
is something these ppl are masters at.
Because if a story has no good characters,
it is not good - accorning to Kazuo Koike.
I guess I don't like the characters of DB...
every single villain is downright boring.

Every character in dbz (with the excption of mr satan and Kaioshin)dies altleast once in the series...How does that make them Immortial?

I didn't say I didn't like the fighting.
My favorite anime manga are all action packed.
I just find DB boring because of the lack of story,
ínteresting characters and that it never ends...

I am 17 years old, I've been into anime/manga for 11 years.
I do know what good anime and manga is, believe me!
And as far as I know, Dragon Ball is not one of the better.
I have nothing against the beginning of Dragon Ball, really.
But then it just went down into the trash, everything,
not the fights maybe, but story and an interesting point...

Seriously though, this thread has gotten pretty far-fetched. Yes, I like DBZ and GT was ok and I never really watched DB, but so what if some people don't like it? Does it really matter? If someone elses opinion on something you like affects your feelings about that matter, then maybe you should take a step back and re-evaluate the situation and truly find out where you stand.

I don't like Dragonball Z, or any Akira Torayama works for that matter. But that's only because I'm NOT one of it's target audiences... I buy Dragonball EVERYTHING for my 7-yr old son, DVDs games and toys--I disliked Pokemon too, but I spent more money on that crap for my daughter than anyone else on this forum, I'd wager.

Listen, everyone seems to think there's this ONE anime package coming out of Japan. There isn't... it's an entertainment FORMAT over there. If you're from the U.S. or Mexico, you grew up thinking that animation is relegated to the 'backwater' timeslots like afterschool or saturday morning... that's not the case in Japan.

Arguing the merits of a particular genre of anime versus another is like arguing primetime sitcoms vs daytime soaps in the US. Animation isn't a niche 'kids' thing there, it's a thriving media industry. Just as there are ppl for whom 'Dawson's Creek' was written for, there's a whole different category of viewers 'Baywatch' was produced for--comparing the merits for both is silly if not impossible. It's the same for anime in Japan (there are names for the categories: Shoujo, Shounen etc... should look into it if u wanna avoid watching anime aimed at highschool GIRLS). There's anime targetted at every audience demographic on Japanese television, and if you like DBZ that's by _design_.

I don't try to convince my kid that Hoshi no Koe is a cultural masterpiece compared to his digimon favorites. It won't work, and it's silly... he understands sophistication and depth as such, but right now he's more concerned about explosions and big fights. I buy what he likes and I watch it with him... hopefully he'll outgrow DBZ soon and get into something at least better animated.

I agree, thats a valid and well put point mvorman, but getting back to the original sentiment of the forum "one show i wont call anime". Due to my/our exposure to what we call anime, in my mind it seems fair to view dbz, hamtaro, digimon and thier like as cartoons like scooby doo or any modern contemporary (can't think one one right now) and not as the image of anime i subscibe to in my mind.

I dunno about DBZ... I tried watching it once on cartoon network & couldn't understand a thing. It was sooooo slow..

but I saw an AMV this kid in my film class did (from unedited canadian broadcasts) to a Pastor Troy song & I have to admit it was pretty cool.

as for hamtaro & kogepan...

I dunno about hamtaro, but kogepan was never really meant to be an anime. I mean, he's a grumpy red bean cake - there's not much you can do with that story-wise - but he's a san-x character & you have to respect them for the extremely odd, cute little things they are.

And as for all you americans out there be thankful you dont have to listen to the UK dubbed version. They got back alot of the orignal voices(vegeta,chichi,krillen,oxking,piccolo,yamcha,tien,king kai,bound to be others but cant remember)but alot of the other voices are absoutly horrible,they clearly use krillen to do Babadi(he barly even changes his voice)they use they guy who played Quatra(sp?) from gundam wing, i think Trowa(GW) played Goku, and Bulma was played by the girl that does Holly's voice from monster rancher,and lets not get started on how bad Roshi And Old Kaioshin's voices were...
As for the new GT bluewater dubs...OMG does vegetas voice suck a$$ ,its the only voice i have heard so far but i know it sucks...

And just wondering...does anybody else think that the voice for Baby-Vegeta sounds alot like the orignal Vegeta?

so as this is a free forum i think i'll enter my 1cent... i'll owe the other cent later...

1- anime = animation style with distinct characteristics [we really can't nail these down but we all know an anime when we see one... though it gets harder and harder as there get more and more copycats]

2- theme, plot, character design, and plot development are unique[even if borrowed] to a specific series, however these are not really indicative of the anime style... i challenge you to try to narrow these down... you'll find they're a lot more varied than the animation cues and can be applied to multiple genres

3- opinions are like a$$holes.... everyone's got one... get used to it cuz some a$$holes are more agreeable than others... it all depends on who you are

4- TARGET AUDIENCE---> likes and dislikes are allowed to change... but that does not change the intrinsic nature of what something is... you just react differently to them

art is art only because it has it's admirers and it's critics...

he said they were unedited canadian broadcasts his cousin sent him... the fighting was definitely more graphic than what they show in the us. a lot more punches being landed, people getting hurt. all the footage had this strange logo in the corner I didn't recognize. this was a while ago, so I can't help much. maybe the canadian broadcasts are just less edited...

well even thought there is no fucking point to it, it still is anime....ive only seen the intro to it and i really disliked it...

Now I think that DBZ sucks, but in a good way. Think about the old batman series with Adam West. It's awful, but funny. Just like DBZ.
