Could you please explain how to irc from a client point of view. I've tried reading stuff and i cant find anything that does a good job explaining it. I can get to the channel fine, but after that I have no idea what to do.
Thanks

ok, veering from fserving to answer cobman's question.
general channel heirarchy... if you look to your right, you will see a list. that list is called the nick list. it lists everyone in the channel in alphabetical order and by rank. there are multiple prefixs. @ stands for operators, they manage the channel and have the power to ban people from channels. % are half operators, they also have power to ban but lack power to change settings in the channel unlike operators (these are not applied on mircx), + are voiced users, they are people who are serving files. most poeple thing that the + does nothing, but when operators decide to change the channel to moderated, only those who are voiced will be able to speak.
if you wish to pm (personal message) a person and not pass through the channel, just double click their nick in the nick list and it will open a query window. that window will be just between you two.
the pink text is called action text. it is used to represent action... to use it use the /me command. so "/me is writing this post" would look like: * Gomu is writing this post
to change your nick (handle) use the /nick command. there are limits on what characters you can use and you cannot use nick that other people use. some nicks are registered, so you would be unable to use that nick without the proper password. to register your own nick, /msg nickserv register (you password) (your email). nickserv will then email you with a comfirmation email. registering is free of charge.
There are several commands you should know.
The most important one is !rules. it will display a list of the rules on most channels. i know #animeforever and #fangirlfriday has a !rules trigger because i made them. Common things inside !rules would be, be courtious to other people, whether @find is allowed or not, whether xdcc list is allowed or not, etc.
Moving on, !list is a trigger in which most servers will respond to you with. If people are serving, they will send you a notice with server information. If you want to learn how to get files on mirc, please visit animeforever's faq section. Hung-Lo has already made a faq on how to leech.
@find (text) is a command in which servers scan their allowed files to see if they have a filename that matches (text). If you plan on using this command, make sure it is allowed in the channel. if you dont, you can quickly be banned. also, remember that this command scans filenames, so @find iy is absolutly pointless because no one names their files iy, just do a @find inu or something like that.
xdcc list is a command where those who have xdcc servers will respond to you. this command is the most likely to not be allowed so be warned. xdcc is a term for servers that usually have a high bandwidth capabilities, usually from rooters. if you dont want to be banned, ask some people in the channel if they know any xdcc bots in the channel, or wait for an advertisement for xdcc's. NEVER XDCC LIST ALL THE OPS AND HOPS. it pisses alot of people off.
this is all i can think of. if you have a more specific question, dont be afraid to ask, il try to answer it

ok i have another question.
what does this mean?
"This server is using an alternate server method, please make sure your DCC Server is active and set to port 59. /dccserver +sc on 59. This is a mIRC command."
when i enter /dccserver this is the response i get
"DCC Server is on (59,Send,Chat,Fserve)"
so it looks like my server is on and i'm set to port 59, however i keep getting the same msg. can you explain whats going on?
thank you for you help (and all the quality anime - AF-F is way better than using kazaa)

QUOTE(cobman @ Jun 25 2003, 09:27 PM)
what does this mean?
"This server is using an alternate server method, please make sure your DCC Server is active and set to port 59. /dccserver +sc on 59. This is a mIRC command."
That server is using what is called "Firewall Workaround." What happens is that if the person hosting the fserve is firewalled, or has a router, he/she might not be able to have all ports open. So what this command does is accepts dcc connections through a specified port. Therefore, if the server has a firewall, while the leecher (you) do not, you will still be able to get files from them.
Firewall Workaround does not require the host of the server to forward ports, but if the leecher is trying to get a file from a specified port, he/she must have that port open. To forward ports for a router, look up your router manual or download the manual at the home page for the router's manufactuer.
Firewall Workaround can be activated (only by
Sysreset) by going to: Menu Bar > Sysreset > File Server Manager > Server Config Tab > Change Basic Option to Advanced Options > Then clicking on "Firewall Workaround". When enabled, it will prompt you on what port you wish to use. If you have no idea what port to use, or do not plan on forwarding any specific ports, forward port 59.
When activated, it will display a msg to the leecher as in the quote if the ports do not match up.
Specifically answering your question, it is most likely because you have a router/firewall installed on that computer. If you do not manually forward port 59, the server will not reconize that you have that port free and will not send. But even if it did send, no data will be sent because a direct connection between you two would be impossible. Fixing this problem all leads down to you altering settings on your router or removing it.

"You have a DCC pending, Set your client to receive the transfer. (150 seconds remaining until timeout)"

When you're downloading anime via irc, it's easiet to set receiving file to automatic.
In mIRC that's
File => Options => DCC
On Send Request :
check Auto-get file and minimize
If file exists = Resume
Also in DCC => Folders
set "DCC ignore" to "Disabled"

ah thank you thank you
it was the second step "Also in DCC => Folders set "DCC ignore" to "Disabled"" that was the problem
it works fine now...

mIRC can resume downloads correct? How would I go about resuming? Does it do it automatically by applying the top method (by:Sylf)?

yes. lol. but the server has to have resume active. just having resume on your end wont do much.

Ok, so I just figured out how to connect! I think I'm twice as computer literate as I was before...ugh. Anyway, really stupid question, but there's so much information to waid through on this subject I figured I'd ask the stupid question that isn't likely to be covered anywhere else.
So...is there anyway to minimize the IRC server or whatnot to your system tray? Stupid question, I know...but I'll ask anyway. Feel free to respond, or not.

I know I sound (and probably am) incredibly braindead, but I don't even know how to log on to the server

Dec 9 2003, 02:17 AM
to connect to a server... the command is /server <server name>
such examples are:
/server irc.aniverse.com
/server irc.mircx.com
/server irc.enterthegame.com
/server irc.dal.net
etc...
there is a long list of servers within your options...
tools > options > connect > servers
most servers use 6660 - 6670 ports for connecting.... if you have trouble because the school firewall has blocked them... just try them individually with /server <server name> [port number]
my old school firewall blocked out ports 6660-6669 so i was forced to use 6670 to connect to mirc... example: /server irc.mircx.com 6670
if you want to connect to multiple servers at a time, you first need atleast 6.0 version of mirc or higher. once you have that, you can use /server -m <server name> to connect to multiple servers at once...
if i forgot anything just ask

Ok...this is completely unrelated to fserving but I do have a problem with mIRC. My problem is that it seems everytime a file transfer ends from and xdcc server (not sure if this happens with fserves havent dled from one in a while) my mIRC automatically disconnects me. I get the error message: "[10053] Software caused connection abort." This is a problem because any queues I have on fserves are lost. Help Plz!
Gomu
Dec 10 2003, 10:41 PM
that problem is quite new to me... what i would do first... is replace your current mirc script... try this one
http://www.sysreset.comyour current mirc script might be trying to do something specific after you get a file which causes you to software abort...
if this does not solve your problem... the only other possibility would be your isp ( internet service provider ) which might have trouble doing multiple things at the same time... like staying connected to a server and getting a file...
i have never even heard of this problem before so i can't really give you much meaningfull advice

hi, it's me again, if anyone can recall I had a problem with MIrc freezing when I tried to download off of mirc bots (I posted this in another fourm here, I forgot where though, anyway I figured out that I had about 3gb's worth of ad/spyware on my computer, so I used my spy bot destroyer x2000 thing and got rid of them , so now got work on my computer. . .kinda, now I have been using the lecbarchive bot since I fixed this, because. It didn't work at all before, and I got a couple eps of le at about 30kbs/sec, so I tried AF plushie and I got a download at about 200kbs/sec, but my comp began crashing again, So I guessing that my computer can't handle super fast download speeds like that, So I wanted to know if there is a way on MIRC (or just reguar windowsxp) to set a limit to my download speed to like about 50kbs, or any other speed value I want??? anyway yeah, so that's all thanks for listening.

Please don't kill me for asking a potentially stupid question but I'm a mirc newbie. >_<;;
If one cannot do a
/msg XX|BOT xdcc list command and the channel has no advertisements for bots where you can see the listings, how can one find a file on a bot? There are channels where URLs to webpages for bot listings are advertised (Ani-Kraze is very organized in that sense... please don't kill me for mentioning another group as an example >_<;; ) but there are many more channels where xdcc list is prohibited and where there are no directions as to webpages with bot listings. It's... next to impossible to find out what the bots have. Is it supposed to be this way? Are bot listings supposed to be privileged information that only those "in the know" are supposed to know?
tuxedojericho
Dec 29 2003, 11:49 AM
The not allowing a XDCC list means in the main chat channel.
You can /msg a bot for a xdcc list to get the pack listing, but doing just the command
xdcc list
in the main chat, that is what will get you kicked and banned for a short time.
And, no, the listing for the bots are not for the "people in the know" it's just for people who know on how to get them. If I'm not mistaken, it's listed in the !rules.

Also, you might just try to limit the bandwidth used, if you can in a firewall.. If not, I'm stumped..

Try using a diff port number when connecting..
Try /server irc.mircx.com:7000
or even try /server irc2.mircx.com
Usually, a connection is refused when you try to access an IRC access port number that does not exist.

Yes, it seems mircx.com has been having a huge DDOS attack, which is in effect a massaive ping of death.
In terms people might understand.
1. A ping would be like someone tring to enter WAL-MART through the front door.
2. A DDOS attack tries to keep millions & millions of people tring to go through the same door at the same time, thus blocking the door from customers who want to get in.

In most fserve clients, they have the option to (inb the fserve settings) to vierw the number of times you were accessed.
Possible causes: 1, you are behind a firewall and don't have the ports you want to use for mIRC fowarded to you.
2: You simple don't habve it enabled or you forgot to acitvate it.
3. Since you aren't on that much, perhaps no one has tried to access it yet.

Well, if you have physcial access to the firewall. Meaning that it's yours, or you are the one who operates it. Also meaning that it doesn not belong to a school/university then do the folowing steps.
1. Login to the router.
2. Look around for "Port Forwarding" or something like that.
3. Sets ports for mirc dcc forwarded only to you(I have ports 9000-9999 going right to me).
4. In mIRC's DCC options, under the tab for OPTIONS, you should see a small section for DCC ports, put the DCC ports to what you entered into the port Forwarding section of the router.
Now, I was telling what to look up for a Linksys router or a "Network Anywhere" router (made my linksys). If you still have access to the router, I also do sujest reading its user manual foir help.
If it's a school's router, then sorry, I can't help. You can try to hack into it, but if you do, prepair to have cops/feds/school secutiry possibly take your computer, and you might prepair for prision.
