Licensing does bring anime out in the world, but it's still frustrating for the fans to be following a series on fansubs and then be cut off from their addiction right before the end ^_~;; I wouldn't mind the licensing so much if the companies had a faster turnaround time! If we only have to wait a year or so it's alright, but once a company takes about 4-5 years... Well, let's just say that I've been told my memory is as good as a half-dead goldfish, so do you really think I'll remember much about the series (let alone be still obsessed with it) after that long

?
Part of the problem is that American companies are licensing these titles before they are finished in Japan or before they even start! Take
Big O. Once Cartoon Network obtained the rights to play it, they also worked a deal with the Japanese company so that they could order new episodes. After CN played
Big O, it got good enough ratings that they exercised their option to have 13 more episodes created. The Japanese company obliged and created/released 13 new episodes in Japan. Because this was licensed from conception, there are no fansubs of episodes 14-26. If CN excercises its option for another 13, those most likely won't be fansubbed either for the same reason.
I believe the series (or season of a series) has to finish its run in Japan before it can be released in America. I don't know if American companies are allowed to work on a title(or season as with "Inuyasha") during the time it is playing in Japan or not. If not, this adds time to its release on top of the time it takes to hire VA's, write an English dub scripts, "officially" subtitle it, etc.
That's the reason I wish fansubbers would do like FgF and continue to release new episodes of a long-running series, even though it has been licensed. Or that a fansub group would go ahead and finish fansubbing the title (GXP is a perfect example). They could put a text MSG in the video file stating, "This title has been licensed by <whatever group>. If you like this title, please support it and purchase the DVD(s) when they are released!"
That's just my opinion though. I'm thankful for all of the hard work all of the fansub groups do.
