A lot of my friends, who are well over 20 watches yu-gi-oh. Some even buying box of cards to play them. Judging from this, I can see why old people such as ghostman2000 loving this series. Don't worry ghost, your not the only person around with cane on their hand. We are old indeed.

Duh, Yu-Gi-Oh! doesn't suck! 4Bakas turned it into a huge advertisement for trading cards and cut off every hint to brutality so that it can even be broadcast in kindergarten. That series has a lot more to it in the original; there are these ties of friendship and trust that I like most when i watch anime. Something like a self-sacrifice for a friend who will die if you don't give your life for him is something that is almost uniquely to be found in anime, since the US TV tends to erase every trace of brutality. Yu-Gi-Oh!, in fact, is not that much about cards (filler seasons excluded), but a lot more about how you can measure your strengh in a game, which is not something new, but quite something old: Even the old Greeks invented the Olympic Games for that. Of course, Yu-Gi-Oh! has big sells of the TCG as goal, so the comparison to the Olympic Games does not fit that well, but a great number of anime series have a similar goal and thus this is no argument against Yu-Gi-Oh!. Also, you peolple who are against that project, don't know what you are talking about. The unaired season does not deal with cards in the way the Duel Monsters season does; in fact, the cards are just used as a "dummy" to guve weaker people like Yugi the chance to gain confidence. The relations between the main characters is the main chracters is the main focus of that unaired season; without spoiling too much: expect a high school girl who works hard for money to make her dream of becoming a dancer become true, but gets blackmailed by a rapist into sex (almost), because he knows about her job which is not allowed for Hich Schollers; also we've got that evil-egyptian-god-EATS-heart-of-evil-human-asshole; not to forget that lessons you gives people who own some of the big sins like greed, brutality, arrogance and such. Each lesson shows the importance of honesty and friendship, especially in hard times. NOW someone tell me that series is a bad one. It's not quite fitting to compare that season to what 4Bakas have made with the Duel Monsters. Also, the manga has also reached a point where there hasn't been a single card for 35 chapters up to now; thus the cards are not éverything :-P.
To me personally, this whole series has quite some good action and suspense and also something catching (i played that game too....but not with real cards....can be compared to Pokemon concerning addictiveness), which makes you deal with own strategies. It also has as many violence as a serious action needs (i just say: Bakura licking the Millennium Eye he has ripped out of Pegasus or Bakura eating a steak like a wild animal...) and also as many dirty jokes as it needs. Also, it has that Yaoi allusion between Yugi and Yami Yugi (was a quite heartbreaking scene) :-P. That's as much as i need from an anime of acceptable quality.

I mean we have all played card games before, and no one has luck like this GUY. I don't CARE how much you believe in the CARDS. There is no way anyone can pull of the stuff he does on CONSISTENT basis like this guy. Which drives me nuts in the series as they raise the stakes so high and he pulls of some one in BILLION combo and wins.

That's my one beef with the show, you couldn't BUY LUCK like that even if was for sale a Walmart!

Because if he didnt he'd lose and the show would fail and the corporations that control the little peons would lose quarter a dollar.

I gotta give some answer to that "why does he alway draw the right cards?" thing. First of all, if you have a deck of forty cards with some useful combos in it and you have to draw 6 cards in the beginning and always one card when it is your turn, you'll have after 5 turns, when most of the episodes start to get serious, a chance of about 33% to draw the card you need next turn. Considering that there are in most cases multiple ways to get to win a game -be it by getting one combo complete or another or just slowing down your opponent with something like Swords of Revealing Light-, your chances are far higher to draw a card that saves the game. After having played that many rounds against Malik's Osiris/Slyfer-combo, I was not surorised that Yugi had the only card that could save the game, since Brainwash is something you save up in your hand for the right moment. I had a lot of duels against the guys from the series on GBA and i must say that i have also drawn my savior quite frequently. But there is indeed a card that can be drawn by Yugi anytime he needs....but that stuff is supposed to come up at about episode 200 :-P.

Personally, I'm quite fond of YuGiOh! What they show on cable TV isn't even the tip of the iceberg of this show - they've totally screwed up Malik's plotline - he has no interest in cards, he just wants Yugi (or Yami, rather) dead. But of course, they couldn't put a crazy (sexy.... ^^) knife killer on a kid's show, now could they? Yami Bakura stabbed himself in the arm and they didn't even show it - he just mysteriously gained a bandage on his arm that was never explained. There's your violence. Yami/Yugi shounen ai/yaoi/whatever? Doesn't exist on the cable edit - but it does in the mnga ^^ And as for the cards... well, for those of you that read Shonen Jump, did the thing begin with card duels? Nope. Rather, it focuses much more strongly on the ties of friendship, courage, and honor. And the occasional psychotic-ness that the yami charries exhibit. To make a long rant short, the show was butchered by Amerian editting companies to make it suitable for little kids - although the show is anything but a show for little kids. I really wish I could watch more of the series, but no one has done a quality fansub of it (damn). Not that I have been able to find, anyway. And so I am reliant upon the scanslations I find on the internet... but if I were merely reading scripts of the WB version and the manga, without pictures, I seriously doubt that I would recognize that the two were in fact from the same anime.

I started watching a fansub somone's been posting in a.b.a and it's not too bad. It definitally has better music than its american counterpart. What bugs me is I had watched the show (yea it's just something you get sucked into. I have a replay tv so it's not like I went out of my way to see eps) Anyways so a while ago I tried playing one of the gameboy games on an emulator. It was pretty fun, but then I understood the game rules. Now when I watch the show it seems pretty stupid. None of the rules apply and the characters overreact way too much.

But how many duels has Yugi been in? Alot and the more you play the more chances there are of you losing right, it just seems that Yugi will never lose. The situations are huge and then he always pulls them out, you never know what Yugi would do if he lost a match. I mean everyone has suffered a loss somewhere right?

You see.. First of all, YuGiOh is good. IT was ruined by the US Media. All of you people who say YuGiOh sucks, obviously didn't watch the first season(The first season that aired in Japan, not US). He lost a match vs Kaiba in Duelest Kingdom. Kabia put himself in a position where he'd die if Yugi attacked so Yugi withdrew and Kaiba won. He was kind of upset but he got over it.

I really dislike this anime. Think of it. It's revolved around a retard that INSTANTLY matures, and his voice deepens dramatically within seconds. And while he duals, he ALWAYS some how makes up things as he goes on. Like blah blah, OH NO, the moon is gone, your water is all dried up.

In fact, that part of the storyy is the worst in my opinion and 4Bakas succeeded in making it almost unbearable to watch. Still, this has nothing to do with the lost first season (There were even other voice actors, fellas! These series don't have enough in common to even bear the same name...) or the following seasons which are far more according to the game rules (e.g. no destroying of own magic cards like the moon to dry out the field). Those who think Yu-Gi-Oh! is not woth watching are only right concerning the US version, but don't even think you have a rough idea how good Yu-Gi-Oh! truly is. So stop posting this short "Yu-Gi-Oh! sucks"-shit; I know that bashing series is allowed, but only very few bashers give that little reasons for their loathing against the bashed series like I have seen in tjis thread.
EDIT: About that deepening of voice: I didn't find that much of it in the Japanese version. I may be wrong, but I think Yugi and yami Yugi have the same voice there. At least you don't think they are completely different persons. there is also some secret behind that personality split, it's not just for dramatic aspects.

heh i heard about this show, and saw it on my telly, and watched it...and almost went into convulsions!!

the cartoon network show is soo horrible!! the animation was almost as bad as pokemon animation!! and the story..well...how many times can you watch a guy get into a fight, look like he's about to loose, then pull out ubercard and save himself? heh...

but maybe i should check out a fansubbed version of the japanese show...

I couldnt believe it was sonsidered in the same genre as shows like noir and trigun... course, that was before I realized the anime they americanize is usually a mutilated version of the original.

hehe yeah america mutilated yugioh and turned it into a kids show. Probably pissed off the original creator somewhat too i would guess since this was never the way it was originally intended. And it's not just about duels but that's what american version focuses on i guess. check out some japanese episodes before saying yugioh is crap. but then again i don't like alot of series other people think are good. So it's each there own i guess and there is a large majority of people who do enjoy yugioh. So just a heads up for fans who are waiting to see series 1 The first ep is soon to be released so enjoy it when it comes or hate it when it comes whatever your fancy is. I know there's some low quality versions of it floating around out there. but I've worked hard to obtain some high quality raws for it. hope the ones who are fans won't be disappointed.
